Recent test: suede in the rain?
High-quality suede should be treated so that it's fine to wear in light rain. But I would try to avoid it if possible.

Wash them less, in cold water, and dry flat. Pilling comes from short, cheap fibers. A sweater comb removes pills without hurting the knit.
